Judy the Belly Dancer

This secondary satellite blog of mine is intended to showcase my miscellaneous works and comics.  So what will go up here?  One of the ideas I’ve been toying with for awhile now is to do drawings of belly dancers.  I’ve always had a fascination for the movements and, of course, the beauty of female belly dancers.  It’s not at all uncommon in the field of art.  The French pastellist Edgar Degas frequently used ballet dancers as a motif in his own work and yet another Frenchman, Eugene Delacroix, made some trips to North Africa where he did drawings and paintings of belly dancers.

Anyway, my goal is to put out my own art book containing a collection of illustrations and a couple of comics, both done in pen-and-ink as well as painted gouache art, about a belly dancer.  So what sort of dancer will be appearing in this book?  Since anthropomorphic animals are my area of expertise, the character I hope to feature in this art book is an anthropomorphic cartoon female bear I’ve simply called “Judy”.  Read the rest of this entry »

The Aim of this Blog

Hello, everyone.  It’s me, Max West, again.  Some of you may know me from my other blog, self-hosted on its own domain.  I’m going to be starting up a second blog, which is this one on WordPress.com.  This blog will officially launch on February 1, 2011.  In the meantime, I’ll be putting up posts periodically here to build up the blog.

I draw comics and I love it more than anything else.  While my main concern at this time is Sunnyville Stories, I have ideas for other projects that I’d like to try out.  This blog will serve as a showcase for that work and its development.

I’ll be posting up artwork and comics up here.  My goal is not only showcase myself, but gain a better understanding of my art and practice my skills in composition, color, line, and the figure.

I’ll be posting up some more next week and I hope to even have a handful of sketches here to show you what I’m working on.  Until next time, friends.

An Artist Emerges

Good evening, friends.  I would call everyone out there “ladies and gentlemen” but you know what you are.

My actual legal name is my own business.  You can call me Max West.  I’m a freelance artist living in New York.  I still work a day job at this time, but I hope someday to become a full-time professional visual artist.  I am already working on an independent comics series which has its own blog.  You can check that out if you wish, but this newer blog is not dedicated to my comics.  It’s meant for something else.  So what is it I plan to do?  I have idea for other comics and also trying my hand at some illustration.  It will be of a fantastic nature – one filled with wonder and will make you ponder if it actually does exist.

This blog will get periodical updates but will not see regular ones until I choose to make it so.  I hope to execute at least part of my secret art project sometime in the coming year of 2011.

I have much to do until then.  I have to work on my comics, build up a network and market myself, and improve my skills.  I cannot succeed at any art – fantastic art, comics, illustration, etc. – until I hone my skills.  That will be my challenge for the coming year.  I’ll be learning linear perspective and color theory in depth.

So wish me luck and stay tuned to this blog.  Big things will happen.
